Get To Know the American Legion Riders

Have you met the American Legion Riders

If not, now is your chance. Read on to learn more about how this organization of American Legion motorcycle enthusiasts got started, how they serve veterans, their families, and our local communities, and how to get involved.

Who Are the American Legion Riders?

The American Legion Riders was formed in fall of 1993 in Garden City, MI. The goal was to create a place where Post, Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion (SAL) members who share an enthusiasm for motorcycles could gather in a family-focused environment.

The American Legion Riders were formed to:

  • Participate in parades and other ceremonies that are in keeping with the aims and purposes of the American Legion
  • Promote motorcycle safety programs
  • Provide a social atmosphere for American Legion members who share an interest in motorcycles
  • Promote and support programs of the American Legion

The first American Legion Riders of Minnesota chapter was formed at Louis Lequier American Legion Post 122 in Deer River, MN. Many more followed in the coming years.

In 2010, through the work of various members, the Minnesota American Legion Riders were formed. The intent was to join all of the state chapters together to support the primary fundraising activities of the American Legion Riders.

How They Serve Our Communities

American Legion Riders can often be found participating in parades and motorcycling events, providing escorts, raising money for charity, and otherwise supporting the communities in which they live, work, and play.

Ultimately, the American Legion Riders exist to help veterans, their families, and the wider community. They do this by:

  • Sponsoring or participating in local charity events
  • Raising money for local organizations like: VA hospitals, veterans relief, needy families, a battered women and children’s center, a school for blind children, several youth programs, and more
  • Sponsoring or participating in motorcycle runs to benefit numerous charities, including charities for underprivileged children and medical research
  • Participation in memorial ceremonies and community parades

They also host an annual motorcycle run to raise funds for the MN Legacy Scholarship.

This scholarship helps ensure that the children of those lost in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the global war on terror can obtain a post-secondary education if they wish. Their goal is to raise a total of $20 million to fully fund this scholarship. To learn more about the MN Legacy Scholarship Run and make a donation, visit their website here.
